Oh hell, this question. I can’t possibly give you an adequate answer — there’s no writer who encompasses the different genres and styles that I like, and there’s no genre or style I like significantly more than others. Also, the reasons why I like/dislike writers changes as I change as a writer. Case in point: Frank O’Hara. I wholly disliked him about 3 years ago, yet last year I found him becoming a poet I kept returning to and now I have a pretty favorable opinion of him.
BUT, there are a few writers who I always enjoy reading: WCW, Whitman, Saul Williams, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lyn Hejinian, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Vonnegut. For reasons that I haven’t quite figured out, I tend to like the Modern novelists.
